Discover Bluefin Grill & Sushi

Walking into Bluefin Grill & Sushi for the first time, I immediately noticed how it balances the relaxed feel of a neighborhood diner with the polish of a modern sushi bar. Located at 1390 Madera Rd #8, Simi Valley, CA 93065, United States, it’s the kind of place locals talk about casually, yet keep coming back to for celebrations, date nights, or even a quick lunch that doesn’t feel rushed. I’ve eaten here multiple times over the past few years, and each visit has been consistent in ways that really matter-freshness, friendly service, and a menu that feels thoughtfully designed rather than overcrowded.

One thing that stands out is how the kitchen handles seafood. Bluefin tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and shrimp are treated with care, which isn’t always a given. According to data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, freshness and proper handling are critical to both flavor and safety, especially for raw fish. You can taste that attention here. The sashimi cuts are clean, with no excess moisture, and the rice is seasoned lightly enough to support the fish instead of overpowering it. A sushi chef once explained to me that good rice should be noticeable but never distracting, and that philosophy clearly applies in this kitchen.

The menu strikes a nice balance between traditional Japanese dishes and approachable grill options. If you’re dining with someone who isn’t big on raw fish, the teriyaki plates, tempura, and grilled seafood offer solid alternatives. I’ve personally ordered the salmon teriyaki on busy evenings when I wanted something comforting and predictable, and it delivered every time. Portions are generous without being wasteful, which aligns with broader industry guidance from organizations like the National Restaurant Association on reducing food waste while maintaining customer satisfaction.

What really elevates the experience is how the staff engages with guests. On one visit, I asked about the difference between two rolls that sounded similar. Instead of a quick answer, the server explained the sauces, texture, and even which one regulars tend to prefer. That kind of detail builds trust. Reviews from local diners often mention the same thing: attentive service that doesn’t feel scripted. In an era where many restaurants struggle with staffing and training, that consistency is worth noting.

There’s also a clear effort to keep ingredients responsibly sourced where possible. While no restaurant can be perfect, the broader sushi industry has increasingly aligned with recommendations from groups like the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program, which encourages sustainable fishing practices. Dishes here reflect an awareness of quality and sourcing, even if not every detail is spelled out on the menu.

The dining room itself is comfortable and unpretentious. You’ll see families, couples, and solo diners all sharing the space without it feeling crowded. It’s not flashy, but that works in its favor. Clean tables, open visibility of the sushi bar, and a steady rhythm from the kitchen create an environment where you can relax and focus on the food. Parking is straightforward, which sounds minor until you’ve dealt with cramped lots at other locations.

Like any restaurant, there are limits. During peak hours, especially weekends, wait times can stretch a bit, and calling ahead helps. Still, the fact that it gets busy says more about its reputation than any marketing ever could. Over time, Bluefin Grill & Sushi has built credibility through repeat customers and word-of-mouth rather than gimmicks.

From a personal standpoint, it’s one of those places I recommend confidently because my experiences align with what others describe in their reviews. Fresh fish, a reliable menu, knowledgeable staff, and a comfortable setting come together in a way that feels genuine. Whether you’re a sushi regular or someone easing into Japanese cuisine, it offers a dependable, enjoyable dining experience rooted in care and consistency.

  • The Kodi roll was outstanding! Have it just the way it is presented from the chef…. No soy, no wasabi. Perfect blend of refreshing cool and mild spice heat. The sushi rice was a little loose, otherwise it would have been a 5 star for food. Paul, our server, was attentive, personable, and right on point. Excellent service, Paul! I must warn about the cocktails, though…. My wife’s Old Fashion was 15 dollars and didn’t come close to filling the glass, while my double bourbon was only 12. Buyer beware…

  • We went there to celebrate our friend’s birthday. The food was pretty tasty. The atmosphere was very nice. The wait staff was pretty good. Occasionally, we needed to get the tables bussed, because they weren’t keeping on top of it. Other than that, it was a nice evening.

  • LOVE this restaurant! Absolutely fresh and tasty food, great service and quiet atmosphere. Went with friends for lunch; 3 had Bento boxes and I had the seared ahi with bok choy and mushrooms. They have the best seared ahi and several dishes with it; I enjoyed the entree. Look forward to returning soon! Understand from friends that the place is much busier for dinner, lunch was quiet and very pleasant. Close parking in shopping center.
